Battle of Hastings 50p Coin Design

Reverse Design: King Harold with arrow in eye at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.Design by John Bergdahl, inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry.

Obverse Design: Queen Elizabeth II portrait by Jody Clark,

First issued by The Royal Mint in 2016, this 50p coin commemorates the 950th anniversary (1066 to 2016) of this famous battle in Sussex, England.

The battle was between the Norman-French army of William, the Duke of Normandy and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson, beginning the Norman conquest of England.

It took place approximately 7 miles northwest of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex, and was a decisive Norman victory!

The artist John Bergdahi took the famous Bayeux Tapestry as his inspiration

since the tapestry captures the battle in the finest detail.

In the centre of the design for this coin, Harold is depicted in the famous scene that so many of us remember from our history lessons – when he is shot through the eye with an arrow in the heat of battle, more arrows protruding from his shield as he faces the onslaught of his opponent’s cavalry.

The coin has the words “BATTLE OF HASTINGS” with Years 1066 and 2016.

The other side has a picture of Her Majesty The Queen and the words “50 PENCE”.

Mark the date that made history with this historical 50p coin

1066 – the famous date

Did King Harold really cower at the sight of Halley’s Comet streaking across the night sky as depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry?

Was he unsettled by this strange phenomenon, a possible omen of ill fortune as his infantry lined up to face the army of William, Duke of Normandy on 14 October 1066?

Events that day would conspire against Harold as William’s crossbows and cavalry prevailed.

With Harold dead and his forces scattered, William claimed a decisive victory that allowed him to seize the English throne.

In 2016 the Royal Mint marked 950 years since that fateful day in a year packed with significant anniversaries, a reminder of the rich seam of history running through these islands.
