The most exciting was the release of the Beatrix Potter 50p coin collection where for the first time ever children’s literature was beautifully represented on coins in general UK circulation with 5 different Beatrix Potter designs.
Also celebrated was the life and works of William Shakespeare with three £2 coins. Team GB was cheered on at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with a commemorative 50p piece.
Aside from the commemorative designs, preparations continued for the introduction of the new 12-sided £1. The one pence, two pence, five pence, and ten pence pieces were minted with over 1 billion 2016 dated coins.
